Women's World Cup 2007

China will host the FIFA Women's World Cup 2007, after being unable to stage the event in 2003 due to the SARS outbreak. In the end, the US hosted the Cup, as they had the 1999 event.

Sixteen nations will take part in the finals. China qualifies automatically, as host.

The other 15 invitations are divided up among six regional confederations from around the world.

UEFA: 5 teams, qualifying through the 2007 European World Cup Qualifying tournament
AFC: 2 teams, qualifying through the 2007 Asian Championship, with the possibility of one more, in a playoff with the third-ranked team from the CONCACAF confederation
CAF: two teams, qualifying through the 2006 African Championship
OFC: one team, qualifying through the 2007 Oceania Championship
CONMEBOL: two teams, qualifying through the 2007 Championship
CONCACAF: two teams, qualifying through the 2006 Gold Cup, with the possibility of a third, depending on a play-off with the third team in the AFC confederation
