The Odds:
It boasts the best squad north of the equator, but two of its superstars, Rooney and Owen, approach the tournament with injuries; will they even play? The world’s under-ranked 10th team should be able to qualify in group B, even if they field shorthanded. But will Sweden rain on their parade? Among the shocks already: the naming of rank beginner Theo Walcott in the squad – he has yet to play a game for Arsenal, yet alone England! Former coach Sir Bobby Robson says that picking the tyro ahead of, say Spurs striker Jermain Defoe or the Premier League's leading scorer, Darren Bent, is a bad idea – Walcott is an unnecessary risk, he believes. Robson is also among observers who doubt that Beckham, for all his skills, is a good captain. In fact, there's more moaning about this squad than seems good for morale. Eriksson is being questioned broadly. Ian Wright, the former Arsenal international and legend, was so disgusted that Eriksson left his son, Shaunt Wright-Phillips, a star at Chelsea, off the squad that he launched a savage attack of the coach. He told reporters: "For five years Eriksson has been the most cautious and negative manager in history. Now, right at the end of his England reign, he has suddenly turned into a reckless Las Vegas gambler. It's all very well for him to chance his arm, but it's the whole nation who will have to pick up the tab." Other criticism has come from another English legend, Alex Ferguson, who has accused Erikkson of managing injured superstar Wayne Rooney's recovery from his broken foot poorly, and that he looks set to risk the 20-year-old Rooney's health and career. Erikkson professes to be unmoved by the criticism. As far as he is concerned, his squad is going to the final game; he isn't predicting, against whom.

Soccernut Boring! 1 Jun 13 2006, 1:38 PM EDT by Bally

OK, so let's get things started. Here on the West Coast of the US, watching the England first game meant getting up at 6 in the morning. I'm going to watch most ofthe Cup from Australia, where I'll be watching the games in the middle of the night. So, any team that plays as conservatively and boringly as England did today has, then, my undying disgain. I mean, please. The next game of this second day of the Cup is Sweden v Trinidad & Tobago, and already it's about 100 times as fun to watch. Sometimes you wonder whether some rule changes would help. If, for example, substitutions could be made freely, so that players who went off could later come back on, then teams that were behind could afford to go all out for a goal or two. The pace would be much more torrid, and the viewing would be much more enjoyable. This change was adopted in Australian Rules Football, a decade or so ago, with great results. For now, let's all just deplore boring play like England's, today, and for that matter, like Germany's, yesterday.

OK, there's been a lot of hoo-ha about the England squad recently, so let's talk about that!

I think the basic squad is sound but there are is, for me, a couple of questionable decisions. Unlike many others, I don't mind seeing Owen Hargreaves in there - in big tournaments, you're gonna need guys who can fill in reasonably well in lots of different positions. Hargreaves (and, to some extent, Carragher) fulfils that role. My problems lie up-front.

I don't think it's right to pick Rooney, if there's little chance of him being properly match-fit. I know he can do great things on the pitch, but I'd rather have a fully-fit Defoe, say, than a half-fit Rooney. And Wallcott?! He's not even played for Arsenal since he signed, let alone England! I know that in half the tournaments of the past eight years a young English forward has exploded onto the scene - yes, Owen and Rooney, I'm talking about you! - but to expect someone so young to do the same is a bit daft to say the least.

Maybe Sven is putting players in with one eye on the future...
