I am sorry to say that a former employee of TWEG has died. gavin_ was fired not ot many weeks ago but before that he was very close to the site and a good friend of mine.
I would be very grateful if we could all think of Gavin's family and friends this Christmas and leave messages of remorse on www.spiralinc.wetpaint.com
This is a very sad time for all of us who knew him.
Thanks, Gareth Edwards (Managing Director) www.tweg.co.uk

I always groan when I hear that a new, lighter ball is being used in the World Cup. It means, simply, that more shots are going to be ballooned over the bar than ever before! Funky designs are fine as long as the thing flies like the balls the players have been kicking all season.
In short, no to new balls!

I'm now in Australia, watching the games at ungodly times of the night. But I'll say this: The commentators here really are excellent (there's just one per game, and every one of them knows football inside out). There is no prattling and prating, at all, about Australia's national glory. It is just a commentary with an occasional "oh my, they're up against it now," or occasional remark about, say, how badly the ref missed this or that call (a common occurrence, on this morning's Croatia v Australia game - but the commentator was even-handed, and went back to demonstrate that Kewell had been offside when he scored the second Australian goal; mind you, the first Croatian goal was from a nonsense penalty, while the Croatian who gave up the first goal through a penalty for handball later committed another handball right in front, which the ref waived away, mysteriously). So, back to the commentary: What a refreshing change from what we suffer in the US. The studio commentators in Australia were Rale Rasic, who coached the team when it last went to the Cup, in 1974 – a hardened Croat who had tears in his eyes as he summed up at the end – and a former Socceroo who likewise did no bragging and blustering... Meanwhile, Australia v Italy Tuesday midnight, here. As one fan commented before today's game, which caused divided or confused loyalties, as there are so many Croatian-Australians): "Who you gonna barrack for, your mother or your father?" Australia is hugely of Italian background, since the 1940s and 1950s. I'm planning to go to the Italian-Australian Club to watch.

If FIFA is serious about sending home refs who suck, then they'd best pack the bags of that drongo who reffed the Australia-Japan game. Shouldn't have let him out for the second half.

RE: Refs

I love it: FIFA is not penalizing Harry Kewell for spraying the German ref in Australia's 0-2 loss to Brazil because of "an inconsistent report from the referee." Inconsistency being his forte. Austalia received one-quarter as many penalties as Brazil, and the ref refused to hear at all from Australian captain Mark Viduka, or to explain any of the penalties to him. That German ref was a true believer in the beauty of Brazilian football. I don't know if Australia would beat Brazil twice in ten games, but they showed up for this one and played well. Australia might be the prime example of what Germans feel they must punish. A free-wheeling nation, a former penal colony--Mein Gott!--with a hardnosed approach to the game. If Australia played Scotland with a German ref, there would be twenty-two red cards, and afterwards the teams would go drink together.

A woman from Australia was looking forward to the Brazil-Australia game. During pregame festivities (which were huge, with Brazilians and Australians partying together in their mutual yellow team color), someone nicked her purse, and her ticket to the game with it. The apparent thief was arrested later on, after he had sat in the woman's seat – next to her husband.
